Published Research on Gout and Arthritis Pain-Fighting Ability of Cherries

In 1950, Ludwig Blau, who was confined to a wheelchair because of a serious form of gout announced in the Texas reports on Biology and Medicine that cherries helped eradicate his painful case of gout. Furthermore, he states that he ate a dose of six to eight cherries per day and he observed dramatic results after doing so because it has effectively managed the occurrence of his gout.

A study in 2003, which was done in the US Agricultural Research Service Western Nutrition Research Center in David, California, as published in the Journal of Nutrition, focuses on the anti-inflammatory study with the use of cherries. The sample of the study comprised of 45 volunteers who ate fresh cherries. Afterwards, their plasma uric acid was closely observed. It revealed that the plasma uric acid levels of the sample significantly depreciated 5 hours immediately after eating cherries.

Dr. Muralee Nair from Michigan State University also supports this fact with another study and recommends consuming about 20 or more cherries everyday so as to help alleviate inflammation as well as pain attacks associated with gout. In addition, Dr. Nair also stated that if you consume cherries on a daily basis, it can certainly improve the body’s condition especially when suffering from gout or arthritis.

It may be a bit puzzling to think of what specifically makes the cherries an effective and delectable treatment to gout and arthritis. For one, cherry juice has been proven to lower uric acid levels in the blood which is actually the cause of inflammation and pain amongst gout patients.
